What you’ll need

You will need a copy of the 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons rules from either the Player’s Handbook or the downloadable Basic Rules.

You will also need a Character Sheet.

Character Creation Rules

1. Choose a Race

Races available:

  • Dwarf
  • Elf
  • Halfling
  • Human
  • Gnome
  • Half-Elf

Not playable:

  • Dragonborn
  • Tiefling
  • Half-Orc

2. Choose a Class

Classes available:

  • Barbarian
  • Cleric
  • Fighter
  • Paladin
  • Rogue
  • Wizard

Not playable:

  • Bard
  • Druid
  • Monk
  • Ranger
  • Sorcerer
  • Warlock

3. Determine Ability Scores

Use either the standard array of scores:
15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8

or use the point-buy system:

You start with 27 points to spend. 15 is the highest score you can obtain before racial increases. 8 is the minimum.

Ability Score = Points Spent
8 = 0
9 = 1
10 = 2
11 = 3
12 = 4
13 = 5
14 = 7
15 = 9

4. Choose Alignment

Available:

  • Lawful Good (LG)
  • Neutral Good (NG)
  • Chaotic Good (CG)
  • Lawful Neutral (LN)

Not playable:

  • Neutral (N)
  • Chaotic Neutral (CN)
  • Lawful Evil (LE)
  • Neutral Evil (NE)
  • Chaotic Evil (CE)

5. Starting Equipment

You can either take the equipment offered by your class and your background, or take the maximum amount of gold from the Starting Wealth by Class table and purchase whatever you want.

Barbarian: 80 gp
Cleric: 200 gp
Fighter: 200 gp
Paladin: 200 gp
Rogue: 160 gp
Wizard: 160 gp

6. Finishing Touches

Name your character and finish him or her off with the details like height and weight, age, gender, a background, languages, etc.

Then post your character on the Characters Page.

7. Working as a group

You are all starting out in the village of Mistwood and have known (of) each other for a while. Feel free to create whatever bonds between your characters you’d like (best of friends, rivals over the same girl, siblings or other relations, master and follower, etc.).
